The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) is responsible for conducting the Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO) exam. In partnership with the Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) and UGC-recognized state universities, the NBHM conducts the exam. The exam assesses the candidate’s problem-solving skills at the undergraduate level.
The Atomic Energy Department constituted the NBHM that works with the objective to promote higher Mathematics and establish Maths centers. The Board, also, gives financial aid to doctoral and post-doctoral students, in addition to research projects.
Through RMO, the skills of the candidates are recognized while adding to their credentials for applying to foreign universities or jobs.

As per the eligibility norms, only aspirants from classes 9 to 12 qualify to appear for the RMO.
The RMO exam lasts for 3 hours and the type of questions include multiple-choice and problem-solving ones. For answering the multiple-choice questions, the candidates have 2 hours; and the problem-solving questions, 3 hours.
The RMO syllabus covers geometry, linear equations, integers, mathematical equations, inequalities, probability theory, trigonometry, number theory, coordinate geometry, permutations & combinations, elementary graphs, and finite series. Note that statistics and calculus are not included.
After RMO, the candidates are shortlisted from the 27 regions to participate in the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO).
RMO: Preparation Tips
- The RMO has a set syllabus that covers various topics. The candidates must check the syllabus and, then, draft their study schedule. Also, they must make sure to allocate preparation time to all subjects suitably.
- As part of their RMO preparatory studies, the candidates must become well-versed with the various fundamental concepts of the different topics. Note that a clear understanding of the basics is key to success.
- Make sure to practice Maths problems daily. Spend 1-2 hours in a day only to practice varied Mathematics problems.
- Recognize your strong and weak areas. Accordingly, you must work to strengthen your weak areas to improve your overall performance. Also, concentrate mainly on number theory, geometry, and combinatorics.
- To become familiar with the exam pattern and structure, practice by solving practice papers and past years’ question papers. Also, with practice, you can hone your time management skills and solve the questions within time.
- Revise the important formulae and theorems regularly. Also, start solving the questions via conventional methods and, then, move to using shortcuts after you get sufficient practice.
- Always read the questions carefully. If they appear easy, pay more attention. This is important because the problems can be confusing.
- Avoid spending more time on any question. An effective strategy is to solve the easy questions before you start with the tougher ones. Also, before you submit your paper, try and go through your answers again.
- In addition to the basics of topics, delve into the advanced ones as well. You can enhance your understanding of the different concepts by doing so.
