The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are a Government of Indian undertaking and provide an alternative schooling system for India’s meritorious pupils who come from rural sections of the country. The JNVs are co-educational and residential schools, bearing affiliation with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in New Delhi. Also, they have classes from VI to XII where the selected students can avail free stay and education for the 7 years.
The JNVs are managed by the autonomous institution that is the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) in New Delhi. The NVS functions under the Government of India’s Department of School Education and Literacy of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD).
JNVs: Admissions
To gain admissions in the JNVs, the candidates have to appear for the entrance exam that is the JNV Selection Test (JNVST). The CBSE conducts the JNVST to admit pupils to Class VI, on an annual basis, throughout the country. Through the exam, for each JNV, 80 shortlisted applicants get admission. The exam is held in 3 phases every year, as per the session structure of the particular state or union territory.
The students of Class V can apply for the exam only once. The test includes sections on mathematics, mental ability, and regional language.
The JNVs have reservations for the SC/ST candidates that are in accordance with NVS policy. Also, there are reservations for rural classes (75%), urban sections (25%), females (33%), and disabled persons (3%).
