The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education was set up in the state in the 1969 with headquarters in Shimla which is later shifted to Dharamshala. Among the various other responsibilities the Board prescribed the syllabus, courses of instructions and text books for the schools which conduct board examinations throughout the state.
The Board annually conducts the examinations for Xth, XIIth, J.B.T and T.T.C. Every year the number of students appearing in these examinations are increasing and this year around 5 lakh students are going to appear in various board examinations. At present more than 8000 schools are affiliated with the board and there are about 1650 examination centers in the state going to conduct these exams. Apart from conducting the examinations board also publish text books for various classes. It has established 19 sale book depots or information centers which fulfill all the needs of students.
