The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) was set up as per Meghalaya Board of School Education Act in the year 1974. It was established with the mission to regulate, control and to supervise matters related to school education in the state. The board was set up to control the SSLC exam until the Pre-University degree was discontinued by the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). Since then the board was responsible for conducting SSLC and HSSLC examinations in the state as well as financial matter related to them.
The Board is responsible for handling all the academic matters like framing of the syllabus for SSLC and HSSLC, approves and sanctions of the text books, maintaining the policies and strategies regarding the Secondary and higher secondary education in the state etc. At present there are about 1400 affiliated schools in the state with the regional office located in the capital city of Shilong.
The board conducts SSLC examination in the month of March and its results are declared in the 2nd week of June.
