The office of school education in the state of Mizoram was first started in 1973. It became Directorate of School Education in 1989. It is located at McDonald Hill, Zarkawt, Aizawl. This department is mainly responsible for looking after the elementary, secondary, higher, adult and professional education in the state. The structure of education in the state is based on the same pattern as followed by other states of the country with 12 years of schooling (10+2+3). It consists of eight years of elementary education, five years of primary and three years of middle education.
After completing the secondary school students can pursue higher studies in universities or in technical institutes. At elementary level, private schools use English as their medium of instruction while in most of the Government schools the medium of instruction is Mizo. In higher levels English is strictly the major language. All the recognized schools belong to either Central Board of Secondary Education or Mizoram Board of School Education for accreditation.
