The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education is the government administered autonomous examining authority conducting 10th standard examinations in the state which is also called as Madhyamik Pariksha or the secondary examination. The examination is conducted annually and simultaneously all over the state along with affiliates of the board located outside of the state. More than 10, 50,000 students take the exam each year.
West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, head-quartered at Nivedita Bhaban, in Bidhannagar, a suburb of Kolkata was established in the year 1951. It was inaugurated by then Governor of the state Dr. K.N Katju. The main aim of the board was to regulate, control and develop secondary education in the state and to conduct school final examination. Earlier it was done by Calcutta University and now it is renamed as West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. When the journey of the board was started in 1951, there were only 1270 high schools which are now increased to 10238. In the year 1952, the board handled only 42000 examinees which in the year 2006 jumped to 8 lakhs.
