The era of technical education in the eastern state of Bihar started in 1924 with the establishment of the Bihar College of Engineering which is now known as National Institute of Technology. This was the 6th oldest college of engineering in the country. With the literacy rate of 63.4% the state capital Patna is the hub of top most colleges of Mechanical and Electrical engineering including IIT Patna and NIT Patna. At present, there are 16 engineering colleges and 17 polytechnic institutions are functioning in the state.
Admissions to various engineering colleges are under the administrative control of the Department of Science and Technology. Aspirants need to clear the entrance examination to get enrolled in these colleges which are in accordance with the Bihar Competitive Examination Board (BCECB). The board also conducts Diploma Entrance Competitive Examination for admission in various Polytechnics in Government as well as Government recognized institutions in the state of Bihar.
