Daman & Diu are counted among one of India’s union territories and is the smallest as compared to the others. There are 2 distinct regions (namely, Daman and Diu) that constitute the Union territory (UT); they are separated by the Gulf of Khambhat. The UT is bordered by India’s Gujarat state and the Arabian Sea.
Daman and Diu attract a large number of visitors, owing to their scenic locations. More so, the UT’s education sector continues to grow rapidly. Likewise, from the year 2011 onwards, the Union Government of India has initiated several schemes to promote education therein.
Since the 1500s, Daman & Diu was a Portuguese colony; and, then, in the year 1961, India annexed the territories. Previously, there were trade activities in the UT; thus, the territory remained undeveloped. Nonetheless, with the introduction of the Government schemes in the recent past, provisions for educating the residents are being made.
The literacy rate of Daman & Diu was stated to be over 85% as per the 2011 census reports. In fact, the UT has set up several primary and secondary education schools in recent times.
However, the students travel to adjoining states of Maharashtra and Gujarat to pursue higher education. This is because in areas of higher education the UT is at a developing stage. Even so, the Government has provided aids for building colleges therein.
Indeed, in addition to schools, the UT has the Government Polytechnic institute that bears affiliation with the Gujarat of Technological University and imparts a range of Polytechnic programs. This institute proposes 2 major programs that are the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and Diploma in Civil Engineering. The aspirants who want to gain technical knowledge and fulfill the eligibility norms can apply for the aforesaid courses.
To cater to the web designing education needs of the territory’s residents, an animation course learning center has, also, been set up at Daman & Diu.
Engineering Education
Further, from the Academic year 2018-19, the Government Engineering College started operations from Daman. The College invites applications for Engineering degree courses in a host of disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering.
The Institute aims to provide quality technical education to pupils hailing from the Tribal areas with the purpose of grooming them into skilled technocrats.
