Common Teachers Eligibility Test (CTET)

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) administers the Common Teachers Eligibility Test (CTET). The CTET is conducted to recruit eligible candidates for Primary and Secondary level teachers for Classes I to VIII. Primary teachers are for Classes I to V; and Secondary Teachers, for Classes VI to VIII. Also, the exam is held on an all-India level and twice in a year.

The CTET certificate has 7-year validity and the patrons become eligible to apply for jobs in Government schools – including the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and any Central Schools.

CTET consists of two papers; Paper-I and Paper-II. Both papers are for 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Paper-I is applicable for candidates who are applying for teacher positions from Class I to V. And Paper 2 applies for applicants of teacher positions from Classes V to VIII. However, the aspirants can apply for both Paper-I and Paper-II to become a teacher for both levels that are Primary and Elementary/ Secondary ones.

CTET: Application Process

To apply for CTET, you have to make an online application via the official website, www.ctet.nic.in. Here, click on the link ‘Apply Online’ for downloading the Online Application Form. Then, you have to furnish the required personal details in the form. The next step is to upload your Photograph and Signature in the mandatory format. The system, then, generates a Registration Number that is unique to each candidate.

Also, to complete the application process, you have to pay the application fee via net banking / debit card / credit card. After you complete these steps, you will get a Confirmation Page that should be printed for record purposes.

As part of their application, the candidates have to furnish 3 choices for exam centers as well.

CTET: Eligibility Norms

The eligibility criteria for both Paper-I and Paper-II are studied below.

For Paper-I

For Paper-I, the aspirants should satisfy any of the following:

1)     The candidate should pass Senior Secondary exams with minimum 50% marks or any equivalent qualification. Also, they have to pass or be appearing in the final year of the 2nd year Diploma Elementary Education course.

Or

2)    The candidate must pass Senior Secondary with minimum 45% marks or any equivalent. Also, they must pass or be appearing in the final year of the 2nd year of the Diploma in Elementary Education program, as per the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulations of 2002.

Or

3)    The aspirant should secure at least 50% marks in the Senior Secondary exams or have any other equivalent qualification. They should, also, pass or be appearing in the final year of the 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education.

Or

4)    The candidates should pass Senior Secondary exams with minimum 50% aggregate marks or equivalent qualifications. Moreover, they should secure a 2- year Diploma in Education (Special Education) Certificate.

Or

5)    The applicant has to secure a graduation degree in any relevant discipline. More so, they should have a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education Certificate.

Paper-II

For Paper-II, the applicant has to satisfy any of the below-listed conditions.

1)    The candidate should have a graduation degree in any discipline. Besides, they must pass or be appearing in the final year of the Diploma in Elementary Education course.

Or

2)    The applicant should hold a Bachelors degree with minimum 50% aggregate marks. Also, they have to complete the 1-year Bachelor in Education program.

Or

3)    A graduate who has secured 45% minimum marks in graduation exams can apply. Additionally, the candidate has to complete 1 year of the 2-year Bachelor of Education course that is in line with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Norms.

Or

4)    The applicant has to pass Senior Secondary exams with minimum 50% marks or any equivalent qualification. They should, also, pass or be appearing in the final year of the 4-year Bachelor in Elementary Education program.

Or

5)    The candidate has to pass Senior Secondary exams with minimum 50% marks or equivalent qualification. Additionally, they have to either pass or must be appearing in the final year of the 4-year courses including B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed or B.A/B.Sc.Ed.

Or

6)    The aspirant should complete his graduation exams, scoring 50% minimum aggregate marks. Further, they should pass or must be appearing in the 1st year of the Bachelor of Education (Special Education) course.

Age Criteria

Only candidates who are above 18 years are eligible to apply for the CTET. Also, no upper age limit is specified.

CTET: Admit Card

After processing the CTET applications, the authorities release the admit cards of the eligible candidates on the official website. The candidates have to visit the site for downloading their respective admit cards.

On the site, they must click on the ‘Admit Card’ link, following which they have to enter their password and registration number details. Then, after verifying their details, they should click on the ‘Submit’ tab for downloading and printing their Admit card.

Further, when going for the exam, the candidates have to carry their identity proof along with their admit card. For their ID proof, the applicants should have Pan Card or Passport or Driving License or Voter ID card or Aadhaar card. Both documents helps to ascertain the candidate’s identity to the examining authorities.

CTET: Exam Pattern

CTET Paper-I is for applications of Primary Level teachers; and CTET Paper-II, for Elementary Level Teachers.

Both Paper-I and Paper-II are conducted in offline mode and last for 150 minutes. Also, the question papers contain 50 multiple-choice questions that carry 1 mark each.

Paper-I has 5 sections:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy (30 marks compulsory)
  • Language I (30 marks and compulsory)
  • Language II (30 marks and compulsory)
  • Environmental Studies (30 marks)
  • Mathematics (30 marks)

Paper-II contains 4 sections:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy (compulsory and 30 marks)
  • Language I (compulsory and 30 marks)
  • Language II (compulsory and 30 marks)
  • Mathematics and Science (60 marks and applicable for Mathematics and Science teachers)
  • Social Studies / Social Science (60 marks and applicable for Social Studies / Social Science teachers)
  • For teachers of other subjects, they have to attempt any of the last two sections.

CTET: Syllabus

In both Paper-I and Paper-II, the sections on Child Development and Pedagogy focus on educational psychology that applies to children between the age groups of -11 years.

For Language I in both papers, the emphasis is on language development, comprehension, and passages.

For the Maths and Environmental Studies section, the candidates should learn the fundamentals of both subjects for the questions of Paper-I and Paper-II are based on the subject basics.

CTET: Results

The candidates can download their results of the CTET via the official website. Upon browsing the site, they have to click on the ‘CTET Result’ icon after which the system prompts them for their Password and Registration details. Thereafter, the results are exhibited on the screen and they can download their respective results.

Also, the successful candidates receive their CTET certificates via Speed Post; the certifications are valid for 7 years. Also, aspirants can appear for the CTET numerous times. If they want to improve their scores, then also they can re-appear for the exam.

CTET: Qualifying Marks

The general category candidates have to secure at least 60% or 90 marks to qualify for CTET. The reserved classes can avail the benefit of 5% relaxation and thus, have to score minimum 55% or 82.5 marks to qualify.
