The Joint Entrance Exam Advanced (JEE (Advanced)) is one of the two parts of the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE); the other JEE exam is the JEE Main. During the year 2013, the AIEEE and IIT-JEE exams were renamed to JEE Main and JEE (Advanced) respectively.

The Joint Admission Board administers the JEE (Advanced) examination that is conducted once per year in India. One of the seven zonal IITs conducts the JEE (Advanced) exam. The applicants who want admissions in the undergraduate programs of the renowned IITs have to qualify JEE (Advanced). They can apply for courses in Architecture, Engineering, and Science in 23 IITs via the JEE (Advanced) examination.

JEE (Advanced): Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the JEE (Advanced) examination, the applicant has to be one of the 1,50,000 toppers in the JEE Main exam. For admission into the IITs, the category-wise All India Rank in JEE (Advanced) is considered. More so, the aspirant has to come in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in the Class XII exams of any recognized educational board.

JEE (Advanced): Exam Pattern

As part of the computer-based JEE (Advanced) exam, the candidates are given two question papers, with each paper having a duration of 3 hours. In both the English and Hindi language, the question papers are available. Each question paper of the JEE (Advanced) exam is divided into three sections – including Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.

The question papers contain objective-type questions. The questions aim to test the various skills of the candidates: analytical ability, reasoning, and comprehension. For incorrect answers, the applicant’s marks are cut; the negative marking system applies, however, to only some sections.

To answer the questions in the question paper, the candidate has to mark on other, 2-sheet carbonless papers. The applicant does not have to change the alignment of the upper and lower sheets when giving the exam. The upper sheet is an Optical Response Sheet (ORS), which is uniquely designed to be readable by machines.

For answering any of the questions, the applicant has to darken the box specific to the correct answer on the upper sheet; they have to use only a black ballpoint pen to mark the answers. Plus, they have to darken the sheets such that the impression falls on the lower sheet. The responses as marked on the upper sheet are deemed to be final. After giving the exam, the candidate can take away the lower sheet for their records.

The JEE exam has questions of Class XII level on subjects such as Maths, Aptitude, Chemistry, and Physics.

JEE (Advanced): How to apply?

The candidates who are among the top 1,50,000 candidates and have passed the JEE (Main exam) can apply for the JEE  (Advanced) examination. The eligible candidates have to apply via the official website, http://jeeadv.iitd.ac.in/. They have to browse the official website to download the online application form.

The subsequent step is to fill in the required particulars in the application form. Then, they have to pay the Examination fee. During the registration process, the system generates a challan of the SBI branches with Core Banking Solutions (CBS). The payment has to be made before the last date of receiving applications, following which the registration process is complete.

Note:

The JEE (Advanced aspirants) must note that they cannot withdraw their applications after having completed the registration and fee payment processes.

JEE (Advanced): Exam Fees

To pay the exam fee, the applicant can use a debit card or credit card. Also, they can pay via demand draft that is released by any scheduled commercial bank and drawn in the name of the Secretary, CBSE and is payable within Delhi.

JEE (Advanced): Qualifying Marks

The authorities conduct the admission process into the IITs on the basis of the candidate’s category-wise All India Rank in the JEE (Advanced) exam, having the condition that the candidate has to be among the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of their respective educational board.

In the cases of candidates who have passed their Class XII exam the first time in the current year, they have to score minimum 60% marks in their Class XII or other equivalent examination. In some cases, they may also have to submit a certificate from the stipulated Board, mentioning that they come within the top 20 percentile of students.

Whereas, in cases where the Board awards letter grades and does not mention an equivalent percentage of marks, then the applicant has to apply for a certificate from the Board, mentioning the equivalent marks. They have to submit this certificate during the counseling sessions.

JEE (Advanced): Rank Lists

The authorities draw a Common Merit List (CML) as per the performance of the candidates in the JEE (Advanced) examination. To appear in the CML, the applicant has to score minimum 10% in each subject and 35% aggregate marks. For the schedules castes and tribes, separate merit lists are prepared.
