Assistant Commandant Exam – Preparation Tips

The Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) conducts the Assistant Commandant (AC) exam. The exam is held for filling the posts of Assistant Commandants in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The CAPF includes the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

To be eligible for the examination, the applicants should be between the age groups of 20 to 25 years. Also, they must hold a degree from recognized educational boards.

For AC positions in the CRPF and CISF, applications from both men and women are invited. However, only male candidates can apply for AC posts in ITPB, BSF, and SSB.

During the month of October each year, the exam is convened. The examination consists of the Written test, the Physical Efficiency Test, the Medical Test, and the Personal interview rounds. However, only the candidates who clear the written test are called for the Physical Efficiency and Medical Test. Then, only after clearing the previous tests, the aspirant can appear for the Personal Interview round.

Assistant Commandant Exam: Preparation Tips for Written Test

The Written Test entails two question papers that are to be answered the same day.

Paper 1

Paper 1 runs for 2 hours, with a total of 250 marks. Also, the questions are objective in nature and based on Intelligence and General Ability. Moreover, the question paper can be availed in both languages, Hindi and English.

  • The General Ability section has questions that test the candidates on quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning, numerical ability, and data interpretation. Thus, the aspirants should practice regularly to develop their problem-solving skills to excel in this section.
  • The current events section quizzes the candidates on both national and international affairs. Thus, they must read newspapers everyday to remain abreast of the latest happenings.
  • As part of the preparation for the General Science section, the candidates should focus on the study and application of science. Additionally, they should remain updated on the latest developments in the field of science.
  • For the History section, you should focus on studying about India’s past and the factors that lead to the country’s present scenario.
  • The Geography section tests the applicants on their knowledge of the world’s geographical aspects, so they must make sure to prepare accordingly.
  • To prepare for the Politics and Economics section, the aspiring candidates must study about India’s political and economic situation.

Paper 2

Paper 2 is of 200 marks and contains sections on General Knowledge, Essay and Comprehension. The candidates have 2 hours to answer the given questions. The Essay section carries a total of 80 marks and the applicants can choose between English or Hindi. The rest of the sections total to 120 marks and have to be answered only in English.

For the different sections of paper 2, the aspirants must refer to English grammar books. By doing so, they can improve their command over the language. Also, they must ensure to get enough practice on essay writing and comprehension on a regular basis when preparing for the examination.

Note: The candidate has to first clear Paper 1 and secure the minimum qualifying scores to the eligible for Paper 2.

Assistant Commandant Exam: Other Rounds

Upon clearing Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the Written Test, the applicants have to appear for the other rounds. These include the Physical Efficiency Test, Medical Test and Personal Interview ones.

The Physical Efficiency Test requires the candidates to perform physical activities. To prepare for this test, you must keep your weight in check and take measures to build your stamina.

The Medical Test is conducted at different centers and is applicable for only those applicants who pass the Physical Efficiency Test.

The Personal Interview round judges the candidates on their personality, confidence levels, mannerisms, presence of mind and other personal characteristics.
