by The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is conducted on a pan-India basis by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) every year. The CTET is held for filling posts of Primary Level Teachers (for classes I to V) and Junior Level Teachers (for classes VI to VIII) in Central Schools.
The CTET exam consists of 2 papers that are Paper-I and Paper-II. Paper-I is for the Primary Level Teachers; and Paper-II, for Junior Level Teachers. Both papers contain 150 questions that carry 1 mark each, taking the total to 150 marks. Also, the duration of each of the papers is 150 minutes.
The question paper has objective-type questions, with 5 sections. Each section consists of 30 questions. The CTET exam has no negative marks for incorrect answers.
Also, the CTET certificate has 7-year validity.
CTET Paper-I
CTET Paper-I has sections on Mathematics, Language-I, Language-II, Child Development & Pedagogy, and Environmental Studies.
CTET Paper-II
CTET Paper-II has sections on Language-I, Language-II, Child Development & Pedagogy, Social Studies & Social Science, and Mathematics & Science.
For Maths & Science teachers, Mathematics and Science sections are compulsory. For Social Science teachers, the sections on Social Studies & Social Science are compulsory. For other subject teachers, they have the option of sections Mathematics & Science or Social Studies & Social Science.
CTET was introduced to set benchmarks of the quality of teachers that are employed. Also, the objective is to improve the teaching standards in Central Government schools.
CTET Exam: Preparation Tips
- Study the extent of the syllabus. Then, you can decide the topics to complete first and the ones later.
- Prepare your time table such that the whole syllabus is covered.
- During the examination, attempt the questions that you are sure about. Only then, you should go for the difficult ones.
- Refer to previous years’ question papers to become familiar with what to expect during the exam. Also, you can download question papers from online sources and solve them for getting sufficient practice.
- In addition to past years’ question papers, you much take regular mock tests as well. Remember the more you practice, higher will be your confidence levels.
- During revision, record the time you take to answer the questions. As much as possible, you must try to stick to the prescribed time limit for each question. By doing so, you can attempt maximum questions.
- For the section on Child Development and Pedagogy, you must study Child Psychology by referring to books on the subject.
- As part of your CTET preparation, you must become well-versed with the exam pattern and different syllabus topics.
- Refer to NCERT and NCF (National Curriculum Framework) textbooks to prepare for the CTET examination. NCERT textbooks are available free of cost on NCERT’s official website that is http://www.ncert.nic.in/.
- Recognize your weak areas by taking regular mock tests and analyzing your performance. Accordingly, you should try to improve in the weak areas.
- If there is less time for preparation, then concentrate more on revision and do not study many topics. However, you must study the important topics and for the same, you can use video tutorials.
- Do not leave any question because there is no negative marking system. Even then, always first go for the questions that you feel confident about.
- Avoid spending extra time on any question if difficult. A good strategy is to leave any question that you are unable to understand within 30 seconds to 1 minute. Later, if you have time, you can attempt them again.
- Maintain your health is an integral part of exam preparation too. All the same, you must make sure to eat well, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep at night (recommended 6-8 hours at night), and exercise on a daily basis. Practicing meditation and yoga are beneficial for health as well. Other than that, you must take measures to relieve stress for improving your concentration levels.
