by The Indian Institute of Technology Management of Madras is the examining body of the computer-based Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE). Since the year 2006, the HSEE is held every year in April across India’s states. Also, HSEE is convened on an all-Indian level for admitting students into the Master’s program that the IITM’s Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) offers.
Both Indian and Foreign Nationals who satisfy the given eligibility criteria can apply for HSEE. Indian Nationals have to complete their 10+2 from recognized educational boards to be eligible to apply.
Moreover, for the Foreign Nationals to be eligible, they must secure a college/university degree that is equivalent to 10+2 in India.
Through HSEE, the applicants can get admissions in 2 streams: Integrated M.A. in English Studies and Integrated M.A. in Development Studies.
Also, the HSEE is divided into two parts: Part I and Part II. Part I is conducted via online mode, with a duration of 150 minutes. Part II is conducted in written mode and lasts for 30 minutes.
Part I contains questions on English & Comprehension (25% of marks), General Knowledge (50% of marks), and Analytical & Quantitative Ability (25% of marks).
Part II contains an English essay on a particular subject.
HSEE: Preparation Tips
- To excel in any competitive exam, remember that practice is key. The same rule applies for HSEE. Now, to get enough practice for HSEE, you must refer to sample question papers regularly.
- As part of your HSEE preparation, you must widen your knowledge on current affairs and global developments. For the same, you must read magazines and newspapers, watch television, and browse popular news-related websites.
- For Part I of the HSEE exam, you can refer to books that are recommended for Banking and similar exams. Also, you must study from your 10+2 textbooks to cover the HSEE syllabus.
- To prepare for HSEE, you can refer to Sociology and History books of BA programs. Nonetheless, do not limit your study material. Even so, use recommended books and online resources.
- The General Knowledge section includes questions on the latest developments around the world. Subscribe to a reliable current affairs magazine for your preparation.
- HSEE’s writing section has a lot of weightage. To prepare for this section, make extra efforts to read books by eminent personalities in the field of economy, law, administration, among others.
- Note that mental and physical preparation is important too. Thus, make sure that you eat healthy, get adequate sleep, and drink enough water to maintain the body hydration. Besides, regular exercise, yoga, and meditation can help to improve your concentration levels.
