by The Joint Admission Test Indian Institute of Technology (JAM IIT) is conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) in Bangalore and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on a pan-India basis, under the supervision of the Ministry of Human Resources Development. During the year 2004, the first JAM was convened.
The candidates who clear JAM become eligible to apply for a range of courses at various IITs. These programs include Joint PhD dual degree, B.Sc. and M.Sc. ones. The exam is held on a rotational basis by the IISC and the IITs. The institute that conducts the exam in a specific year is referred to as the Organizing Institute.
Every year, in February, the JAM is conducted and JAM scores have 1-year validity. JAM aspirants can apply via online mode to appear for the test. Also, JAM has negative marking system.
Both Indian and Foreign Nationals can apply for JAM, if they satisfy the eligibility criteria.
JAM entails eight subjects: Chemistry, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Physics, Geology, Geophysics, Computer Applications, and Biotechnology.
Candidates can appear for either one or two of the above-mentioned subjects. The exam pattern of JAM is descriptive and objective, as per the subjects chosen by the applicants. For Computer Applications and Biotechnology, the exam pattern is objective; and for the others, descriptive.
The objective papers contain 100 questions, with each question carrying 1 mark. The descriptive papers are grouped into two parts that are Part I (60 marks) and Part II (40 marks).
JAM IIT: Preparation Tips
- JAM IIT has questions that are based on graduation courses. So, JAM aspirants who have performed well in your graduation exams are at an advantage. However, start preparing a year before applying for JAM while setting aside 3-4 hours daily to study.
- Start preparing for JAM alongside your graduation exams. Understand the subject fundamentals thoroughly as part of your preparation. Also, draft notes because studying from them is easier than books.
- Consider enrolling in coaching centers to prepare for JAM. They have a structured way of teaching and can help you to score high in the test. Even so, people clear JAM without registering in coaching institutes.
- As per the course that you are applying for, become well-versed with the syllabus. The organizing institutes pronounce the syllabus and you should accordingly. Also, create your study schedule and make sure to cover all subjects.
- For getting enough practice, refer to previous years’ question papers. They are available online and are purchasable too.
- Mock tests can be availed as well. Take mock tests regularly to draft your strategy – pertaining to time management and the topics to be addressed first.
- Refer to reliable JAM books only. Also, you can avail online resources to prepare for JAM, only ensure that they are good ones.
