Towards the Southern region of the Indian Peninsula lies Puducherry which is one of India’s union territories. In Puducherry, the matters pertaining to vocational education are overseen by the union territory’s Directorate of Higher & Technical Education (DHTE). To develop the skills base and bridge the gap of skilled resources in the various Indian states, the Union Government of India initiated the Craftsmen Scheme during the 1950s, under which several government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and privately-owned Industrial Training Centers (ITCs) were set up.

Moreover, a considerable percentage of the country’s youngsters rather pursue technical education than continue with traditional school studies. Thus, with the establishment of the ITIs and ITCs, they can avail the option of enrolling in an array of engineering and non-engineering trade courses – depending on their interests. Upon receiving the technical training, they become eligible to gain employment in industries and in turn, can earn handsome income and improve their standard of living.

After completing the trade programs, the students can approach the employment exchanges for employment opportunities in the country. Depending on whether they have enrolled for the NCVT or SCVT trades, they are conferred with the National Trade Certificate or State Level Trade Certificate, following which they become eligible to apply for national-level or state-level jobs.
