The Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar (IIPHG) started operations during the year 2008 from the center’s interim campus at Ahmedabad city, Gujarat, India.  The center is hailed as the country’s first Public Health University. Guided by the vision of Shri Narendra Modi, the center was constituted. For setting up the institute, both the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and the Government of Gujarat signed an MOU in the year 2007. As per the MoU, the state’s government authorities gave land and contributed towards the project’s costs.

The IIPHG is committed to improving the healthcare provisions in the country via research, training, education and policy decisions. During the institute’s year of commencement, the 1^st batch of students was enrolled for the Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health Management (PGDPHM). The National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) was sponsoring medical officer servicemen – from states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat – for attending the given program. In accordance with the IIPHG Act 2015, the IIPHG has been given recognition as a ‘University’.

Since October 2016, the IIPHG started operating from the center’s permanent campus at Gandhinagar, spanning over 50 acres of land and boasting of top-line infrastructural facilities. The IIPHG is known as India’s largest Public Health University, striving for excellence in Public Health studies.

With the purpose of promoting public health in the country, the IIPHG proposes courses in Hospital Administration, Public Health, Industrial Health, and Public Health Management. Besides, the institute offers courses in distance education mode as well.
