The Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) was instituted by the Kerala Government in the year 2011. KUFOS is a public, autonomous University that specializes in Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. The centre’s headquarters are based on the grounds of the College of Fisheries in Panangad which is near Kochi in Kerala, India.
KUFOS was established after institutes such as the Fisheries Research Station, Puthuvype, and The College of Fisheries, Panangad, Kochi, were combined. Earlier, they were affiliated with the Kerala Agriculture University and then, were disaffiliated to form KUFOS. In the year 1979, the College of Fisheries was established and became a constituent college of the Kerala Agricultural University and later on, the centre became part of KUFOS.
KUFOS is committed to studies in Fisheries and related disciplines. Also, the educational centre is the first of its kind in India and comes under the Fisheries Ministry.
In fact, KUFOS is the only centre that provides the necessary resources for the sustainable development of fisheries and the ocean – in the state of Kerala. Functioning at a national and international level, KUFOS helps to bridge the gap between universities and institutions in the field of Fisheries and Ocean studies.
At the University, as part of Fishery Science studies, the students have subjects in fishery resources, aquaculture, fish culture, and artificial breeding. The courses are run from the University’s Panangad campus.
At KUFOS, the pupils have laboratories, experienced staff, computer laboratories, libraries, farms, hostels, sports grounds and fish hatcheries.
The aspiring students can apply for undergraduate, postgraduate and Doctoral courses in Fisheries Sciences to KUFOS. These programs are compliant with ICRAR protocols.
