The University was set up in 19 August 2008 by the State Government of Madhya Pradesh. The name of the University is kept under the memory of the famous Queen and politician of Gwalior princely state- Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia. This is a well-known agricultural University which offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Veterinary Science, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Horticulture. The purpose of this University is to solve the agriculture and its related problems in various parts of Madhya Pradesh. These problems were solved by the creation of 5 Zonal Agricultural Research Stations, 4 Regional Agricultural Research Station and 4 special research stations. It also has 22 All India Coordinated Research Projects and various adhoc projects to develop the agricultural productivity and profitability. Moreover, transfer of technology is the part of extension activities carried out by 19 Krishi Vigyan Kendras to improve agriculture of Madhya Pradesh.

The University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in areas of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Statistics & Social Science, Agronomy, Entomology, Environmental Science, Extension Education, Fruit Science, Floriculture & Land Scalping, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Soil Science and many more areas of interest which area part of agricultural studies. All these courses are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Admission is given to the students on the basis of merit and entrance test performance.
