by The University of South Carolina (USC) was set up during the year 1801 by the name South Carolina College. However, this premier institution started holding academic sessions only from the year 1805 onwards. Initially, the University was operating from one building, the Rutledge College, having academic centers, administrative offices, residential spaces, and a chapel. In the year 1865, the University was bestowed with University status by the General Assembly, after which the institution came to be known by its present name.
The USC is a public research-oriented university and had made great strides in the field of research and innovation over the years.
The USC has provisions for a host of undergraduate, doctoral, professional, and graduate programs. The nine colleges and six schools of the USC conduct the courses at the varied levels.
Also, the University enjoys sports affiliation with the National Collegiate Athletic Association and has 19 varsity teams partaking in the South-eastern Conference via the name Gamecocks.
The University students also manage ‘The Daily Gamecock, which is a newspaper publication that started operations in the year 1908 onwards and is circulated during the Spring semesters.
The US News was ranked the University of South Carolina 24th in the listing of Best National Universities 2021.
Courses
At the University of South Carolina, students can pursue a multitude of undergraduate courses in several disciplines. These include Business Administration & Management, Real Estate, Cultural & Gender Studies, Computer Science, Social Sciences, Public Health, Nursing, Education, Communications & Broadcast Journalism, Engineering, among others.
Besides, the USC holds more than 240 graduate courses in different areas. These include Mass Communication, Public Administration & Social Sciences, Business Administration & Management, Library Science, Visual & Performing Arts, Health Studies, Engineering, Linguistics, among others.
Campus
The main campus of the USC campus is spread over 359 acres of land in downtown Columbia. Apart from that, the USC has seven satellite campuses at various locations. These include Upstate, Beaufort, Aiken, Union, Sumter, Salkehatchie, and Lancaster.
All these campuses are well-equipped with an array of academic facilities to promote education and research. The campuses have lecture rooms, fully-equipped laboratories, and state-of-the-art classrooms.
Also, the campus offers a range of amenities to enhance the overall learning experience for the students. Some of the facilities that are available for the students include dining halls, athletic spaces, academic blocks, parking zones, and residential hubs. Other facilities that the University offers are internet connectivity and shuttle service.
Aside from that, the campus houses a series of libraries, with the entire suite of printed and digital aids.
